Applauds New Hampshire & Northeast Region for Leadership on Carbon Emissions Reduction

WASHINGTON, D.C. – August 4, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) today welcomed the administration’s announcement of new standards to be administered by the Environmental Protection Agency to address climate change by limiting carbon pollution. The Clean Power Plan, which puts in place the first-ever nationwide carbon pollution strategy, sets state-wide goals for carbon emission reduction with flexibility on how to meet those goals. Senator Shaheen made the following statement after the plan was announced:

“Rising temperatures are shortening our fall foliage season, disrupting our maple syrup production, and is causing sea level rise that could imperil businesses and homes along our seacoast,” said Shaheen. “Through the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, New Hampshire, along with eight other Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic states, has been aggressive in reducing carbon emissions that are contributing to climate change. The Granite State has led in this effort by reducing its power sector carbon pollution by 49 percent since 2008. I welcome the new federal Clean Power Plan, as it will require other states to finally follow our lead. This is also an opportunity to advance clean and renewable forms of energy and improve energy efficiency across the country. This plan is a big step forward in our efforts to address climate change as it recognizes that every region of the country needs to play their part in reducing carbon pollution.”

The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) was the first market-based regulatory program in the United States to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. RGGI is a cooperative effort among the states of Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont to cap and reduce CO2 emissions from the power sector
