Governor Lynch and Executive Council Proclaim October 3rd ‘ENERGY STAR Change a Light, Change the World Day’

-

CONCORD, October 3, 2007 – Gov. John Lynch and the Executive Council today proclaimed October 3rd as “ENERGY STAR Change a Light, Change the World Day” as part of a nationwide effort to highlight simple steps citizens can take to save energy, money and reduce pollution.

“Lighting accounts for nearly 20 percent of the electricity we use in our homes,” Gov. Lynch said. “Switching to energy-efficient lighting is an easy step we can take to reduce our energy use, save on our electric bills and reduce pollution. I encourage all New Hampshire citizens to consider taking the ENERGY STAR Change a Light Pledge.”

New Hampshire residents can take the Pledge at energystar.gov/changealight.

Citizens are encouraged to switch to light fixtures or bulbs that have earned the ENERGY STAR label, which designates products that prevent greenhouse gas emissions by meeting strict energy efficiency criteria set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy.

If every household in New Hampshire changed one light bulb, as a state New Hampshire would save more than $3.7 million in energy costs and prevent more than 39 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to taking more than 3,000 cars off the road.

Qualifying energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) use 75 percent less energy than standard bulbs and last six to ten times longer.

Businesses, organizations and local governments in New Hampshire are participating in this campaign by setting Change a Light pledge goals for their respective members. Last year businesses like New Hampshire Ball Bearing, Millipore Corporation, and Stonyfield Farm set goals and either reached or exceeded their goals.

A new 2007-2008 goal for New Hampshire state agencies is to get 500 state employees to take the pledge to change at least one incandescent light to a CFL. During last year’s campaign, 506 state employees took the pledge, resulting in an energy savings of 532,416 kWh, a cost savings of $49,515, and a reduction in greenhouse gases of 772,192 pounds. State employees are participating in the Change a Light, Change the World campaign through displays and lighting promotions at four different state agency locations on October 3 and October 4, organized by the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services.
