GREGG AND SUNUNU ANNOUNCE $2 MILLION GRANT FOR NASHUA BOILER HOUSE

WASHINGTON - May 1, 2008 - U.S. Senators Judd Gregg and John Sununu (R-NH) today announced that Nashua will receive a $2 million grant from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development to help rehabilitate and renovate the historic Boiler House property. These funds will allow the City of Nashua to clean-up environmental contaminants within the property, primarily asbestos, which is required before the rehabilitation of the Boiler House and adjacent coal storage building begins. In 2007, Nashua received a $200,000 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Brownfields Clean-Up grant for the project.

Senator Gregg stated, “This grant award reflects the continued commitment the City has made to redeveloping and reenergizing its historic Riverfront and Mill District. While the presence of asbestos and other contaminants is a reminder of Nashua’s industrial heritage, the City deserves special recognition for the proactive steps it is taking to clean-up and protect the environment. These efforts will improve the quality of life in the Nashua community and I congratulate the City for its hard work.”

Senator Sununu stated, “Returning contaminated property to productive use in Nashua or any community across our state helps to increase local tax revenues and creates jobs,” said Sununu. “This Housing and Urban Development funding will play a key role in helping to clean up the Boiler House and make it ready for redevelopment. City officials and all the parties who have come together for the betterment of the community deserve our thanks and praise for their hard work.”

The Boiler House is a key area in the 61 acre mill complex that was formerly part of the Nashua Manufacturing Company, which operated in the City from 1823 to 1945. The entire complex comprises the Nashua Manufacturing Company Historic District and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
