Ayotte Named Defender of Housing by the NH Chapter of the National Association of Home Builders

CONCORD, N.H. – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte received the Defender of Housing Award from the New Hampshire Chapter of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) for her work on measures that increase access to affordable housing. Senator Ayotte is the only New England Senator to receive this award this year.

“Today, I am honored to receive the Defender of Housing Award from the NH Chapter of the National Association of Home Builders. New Hampshire has a great need for affordable housing, and I am committed to supporting legislation that provides greater access for low-income families and seniors,” said Senator Ayotte. “Increasing affordable housing in New Hampshire will benefit our communities, and will help grow jobs in our state.”

Ayotte is cosponsoring a number of initiatives to increase access to affordable housing and provide assistance to low-income families and seniors. Recently, Ayotte cosponsored the Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act that would strengthen the Low Income Housing Tax Credit to help increase the availability of affordable housing. Working with Senator Angus King (I-ME), Ayotte helped introduce the Senior Home Modification Assistance Initiative Act (S. 3230) that allows seniors to more easily make accessible-living modifications so they can continue to maintain their independence and safely live at home.

Last year after learning that the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) allowed more than 25,000 families to stay in affordable housing despite earning significantly more than the income limits, Ayotte wrote to HUD asking the department to eliminate this issue so that housing subsidies would only be available to families that need it the most
